Short summary:
Aerial yoga β what is it?
Aerial yoga is otherwise known as yoga in hammocks. Although based on classical yoga, it combines elements of pilates, stretching and acrobatics. The exercises are performed in special hammocks suspended from the ceiling, which are designed to support the body's weight and make it easier to get into particular asanas.
The history of aerial yoga is relatively short, as it originated in the beginning of the 21st century. Unlike classical yoga that originated in Asia, its aerial relative hails from the United States. It was the brainchild of choreographer, Broadway dancer and Olympic athletes' coach Christopher Harrison, who was the first person to invite participants to enjoy group aerial yoga classes in 2007. Today, this discipline is gaining more and more enthusiasts; it is also becoming increasingly popular in Poland.

What are the benefits of aerial yoga?
The advantages of practising aerial yoga are invaluable. It has a wonderful effect on the entire body and mind. Regular aerial yoga practice:
-
strengthens the muscles and increases muscle flexibility, including deep muscles responsible for stabilising the core and muscles we rarely use on a daily basis,
-
decompresses the spine and reduces back pain,
-
improves motor coordination,
-
helps to work on body balance,
-
reduces stress and fosters relaxation,
-
boosts mental resilience,
-
improves concentration.
What's more, aerial yoga helps to overcome barriers and limitations, and because usually it is practised during group classes, it can be a great opportunity to make establish new, meaningful relationships.
Aerial yoga β who is the perfect match for this discipline, and who should drop it?
Aerial yoga can be practised by people of all ages. It is recommended both for children, who learn coordination through exercises performed in a hammock, and for seniors, who can use this form of exercise for flexibility and muscle strengthening. Aerial yoga will also be great for people who are overweight, as the hammocks used during the exercises take some of the body's weight, relieving pressure on the joints.
Aerial yoga is also a great solution for people struggling with postural defects, back pain or people whose job requires prolonged sitting or standing. When we perform exercises in a sling, we decompress the spine, which can not only relieve tension, but also improve our posture.

What are the contraindications? Aerial yoga will not be the right choice for those suffering from, among other things:
-
heart diseases,
-
eye diseases,
-
high blood pressure,
-
discopathy,
-
osteoporosis,
-
arthritis.
Aerial yoga is also not recommended during pregnancy or after recent surgery or head injuries.
What do asanas look like in aerial yoga?
Asanas in aerial yoga are based on traditional yoga poses, but performed in a hammock suspended from the ceiling. First class is usually directed at learning the foundations; the participants have frequent contact with the ground so that they can feel completely safe. More demanding asanas performed while suspended and poses with acrobatic elements are introduced gradually β with intermediate and advanced athletes. So if you're worried whether you can handle it, just sign up for an aerial yoga class for beginners and check it out. This activity will strengthen your entire body, increase muscle flexibility and benefit your mental health.
